AI mobility technology · Proof of concept completed
Walky is a virtual guide dog that turns a smartphone into a real-time navigation companion for people who are blind.
Built for real-world independence
The solution
Walky combines familiar consumer hardware with advanced computer vision and natural voice interaction, creating a practical path toward more independent outdoor navigation.
01
The smartphone sits securely on a chest strap, keeping the live camera view forward-facing while the user’s hands stay free.
02
Computer vision interprets sidewalks, roads, obstacles and crossings from the live camera feed.
03
Bone-conduction earphones provide clear voice guidance while allowing the user to remain aware of surrounding sounds.
Core capabilities
Walky is being developed to support the complete outdoor navigation journey—from choosing a destination to moving along the sidewalk and understanding what is nearby.
Guides the user toward a chosen address with clear, step-by-step voice instructions.
Uses live video to distinguish sidewalks from roads and support safer route decisions.
Identifies obstacles in the user’s path and provides timely directional guidance.
Recognizes crosswalks with or without traffic lights as the user approaches them.
Processes the phone’s live camera feed and responds continuously as the environment changes.
Helps the user identify nearby destinations and points of interest through voice requests.
Why Walky matters
Traditional mobility solutions remain essential, but access can be limited by availability, cost, geography and training. Walky is designed as a scalable, smartphone-based additional option for people who are blind.
The project has received a formal letter of support from the Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind.
